Chapter 1 of 7

A Garden at Dusk

There is a moment before dusk when light turns unearthly — soft, sourceless, suspended. Sargent spent two summers chasing it. Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, finished in 1886, hangs at Tate Britain: two girls among white lilies, lighting paper lanterns.

He set his portraits aside for this one evening.
