Chapter 1 of 7

A Theatre of Light and Knowledge

Before you stands one of Western art's most arresting canvases. Rembrandt painted this in 1632, twenty-five and newly arrived in Amsterdam, fusing portraiture, science, and theatre. The setting: the Surgeons' Guild's Theatrum Anatomicum, where public dissections drew physicians and citizens who came, as to a play, to witness the body's secrets.
