Chapter 1 of 7

A Sunday on the Seine

Step back and let the canvas settle. Bathers at Asnieres — painted in 1884 — shows working-class men beside the Seine: horses in the shallows, a steamer past Clichy. Seurat was twenty-four when he built this three-metre canvas with deliberate dabs of colour, wanting light to be the subject.
