Chapter 1 of 7

Love Conquers War

Here, in one of the most quietly radical paintings of the Renaissance, Botticelli gives us a world in temporary equilibrium. Venus and Mars, painted around 1485, stretches like a half-remembered dream. She alert and composed; he utterly vanquished by sleep.

The god of war, undone not by a sword but by love.
