Chapter 1 of 7

A Portrait of Ownership

Stand before Mr and Mrs Andrews, painted around seventeen fifty by Thomas Gainsborough, and you sense quiet confidence. The couple occupy only the left third of the canvas; everything else belongs to their Suffolk estate — rolling fields, pale sky, landed wealth made visible.
