Chapter 1 of 7

A Suffolk Morning

You are standing before one of the most beloved landscapes in British art. John Constable painted this Suffolk scene for the 1821 Royal Academy — arguing that ordinary rural life deserved the same grandeur as history painting. It changed what landscape could mean.

Delacroix saw it in Paris and was immediately transfixed.
