Chapter 1 of 7

A Field on Fire with Life

Painted in 1889 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, A Wheatfield, with Cypresses now hangs at the National Gallery in London — the most vibrant of several versions Van Gogh made. Wheat bends, clouds churn, a cypress flames upward. And yet the whole canvas feels strangely at peace.
