Chapter 1 of 7

A Nation Holds Its Breath

David completed the Oath of the Horatii in Rome in 1784, and when it reached Paris it caused a sensation — not as art, but as a moral declaration. Three sons receive three swords from their father. The geometry is austere, the air taut — a clenched fist of a painting.
