Chapter 1 of 6

The whole work

Painted around 1509 in Venice — by Titian, or perhaps the young Giorgione, scholars still argue — this is one of the most quietly mysterious pictures of the Renaissance. Two finely-dressed young men make music in a golden landscape, while two nude women linger beside them, unnoticed. Are the women real, or the men's muses, visible only to us?

The painting never says. It simply glows with a warm, dreaming summer light.
