Chapter 1 of 7

A Banquet Beyond Time

Stand back and let this canvas breathe. In 1563, Veronese painted not a Gospel scene but a world — a hundred and thirty figures crowding a sunlit loggia, feasting, gossiping, playing music. Silks shimmer; dogs prowl.

Christ sits at the center, still as water. At ten metres wide, this is the Louvre's largest painting.
