Chapter 1 of 7

A World in a Window

Step close. One of the smallest paintings in the Louvre — barely larger than a sheet of paper — yet Vermeer conjured an entire world inside it. Around 1670, a young woman bends over her work, light from an unseen window falling across her bowed head with the precision of a held breath.

He transforms the humblest moment into something almost sacred.
