Chapter 1 of 7

A Summer Hilltop

Monet painted this in eighteen seventy-five: sky filling half the canvas, grass trembling with movement, a woman and child at the crest of a hill. The woman is Camille, his wife; below her, their seven-year-old son Jean. Setting his easel low, Monet made them tower against the clouds — intimate, monumental.
