Chapter 1 of 7

A Face Made of Summer

Before you stands Summer, painted in 1563 by Arcimboldo for Emperor Maximilian II. At first glance: a face in profile. Look again and it dissolves — peaches, cherries, peas, cucumber, corn, a fig — each element both fruit and facial feature.

A riddle and a celebration. Arcimboldo painted four such works, Spring through Winter, honouring the order that sustained Habsburg power.
