Chapter 1 of 7

A World in Winter

You are standing before one of the greatest winter scenes ever painted. Pieter Bruegel the Elder made this in 1565, as part of a celebrated cycle depicting the months of the year. It is January in Flanders — not imagined, but felt through every brushstroke.

The entire composition tilts downward, from dark foreground labor into pale, frozen distance. No single hero commands it; weather does.
