Chapter 1 of 7

A World Caught at Rest

Painted in 1565, The Harvesters is one of the most quietly radical pictures ever made. Where others filled canvases with saints and princes, Bruegel gave us peasants under an August sky — the earth itself the hero. Part of a series on the months, it holds a community's labor, hunger, and small joys.
