Chapter 1 of 7

A Nation's Most Daring Night

Before you stands one of the most celebrated paintings in American history. Emanuel Leutze completed this twelve-foot canvas in 1851 — Christmas night, 1776, Washington crossing an ice-choked Delaware toward Trenton. The war was going badly.

Thomas Paine had written these were the times that try men's souls. Here they are.
